All About White Cedar Shingles
General contractor Tom Silva explains the architecture, installation, and maintenance of white cedar shingles.

Where to find it?
Tom explained the maintenance of exposed white cedar shingles, which are a common building material in coastal New England.

For the demonstration in the barn after the house call, Tom demonstrated SBC white cedar shingles in a variety of stains. The combination house wrap/air gap Tom used on top of the sheathing was Slicker HP Rainscreen 6mm, which is manufactured by Benjamin Obdyke. For nails, Tom recommended a 6p box nail with a galvanized finish. In the demonstration, he used Grip-Rite 6p galvanized box nails, which can be found at most home centers.

Expert assistance with this segment was provided by SV Design.

How to Fix a Leaky Hose Spigot
Richard Trethewey explains some of the common failure points in hose spigots and how to repair them.

Where to find it?
The spare washer kit, teflon tape, and spigot repair tools can all be found at home centers and plumbing supply houses.

How to Build a Self-Watering Vegetable Garden
Jenn Nawada travels to Raleigh, North Carolina to help a couple build and plant a self-watering vegetable garden.

Where to find it?
Jenn built a heftier raised garden bed using cedar 2x lumber, which she got from Western Red Cedar Lumber Association. The corner brackets that held the lumber together and contained the hose connection are the Aquacorner Raised Bed Soaker System, which is available through online retailers. The timer Jenn connected to the spigot was a 1-port single dial irrigation timer, which can be found at home centers.

Because the homeowners wanted to grow vegetables in the garden, Jenn selected an organic raised bed/potting soil mix. She also selected strawberries, tomatoes, basil, oregano, thyme, Thai basil, and lettuce for the vegetable garden. These can all be found at home centers and nurseries.
